A beautifully toned tetradrachm from Mende

MACEDON. Mende. Circa 460-423 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 17.33 g, 4 h). Dionysos, bearded and holding kantharos in his right hand, reclining left on the back of a donkey walking to right; to right, bird perched right on bush with two flowers. Rev. MEN-ΔA-I-ON around vine with five bunches of grapes within linear square; all within shallow incuse square. Noe, Mende 41 (same obverse die). SNG ANS 330 (same obverse die). Beautifully toned. Minor areas of weakness on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Regierungsrat Dr. iur. Hans Krähenbühl, privately acquired from Bank Leu on 11 March 1969 (with a photocopy of the original invoice enclosed) and ex Platt, s.a. (likely 1920s), 142 ('Collection A.').
